This project is integrated into Lausanne’s topography. It is a continuation of the system of public platforms and gardens that rise one after another in a southwards direction, creating views towards the lake and the mountains. It is placed into a scenario defined by structures that descend towards the south, something characteristic of the geography of Lausanne.

The project fits comfortably into the continuity of the ecological space, forming a green area to the west beside the access road that continues to become a terraced garden belonging to the museum.
The existing embankment on the west of the site is preserved so as to benefit from the plentiful vegetation already present, avoid disrupting the existing topography and limit excavation only to surfaces that are to be opened. It will extend to connect with the rooftop garden by passages.

A number of factors combine to create a building that is mainly subterranean including; choosing to work closely with the natural qualities of the site, having an appreciation for the specifics of conservation and the lack of natural light desired in the photography exhibition and dealing with problems in relation to the railway lines that impose an absence of transparency along the south façade at ground floor level.
The shape of the building, mostly inserted into the ground, provides stable climatic conditions that minimise energy needs and are very effective in conservation.

Natural light is brought into the building through several luminous openings located around the structure, primarily in the working areas. Planted climbing rosebushes along with the use of reflective materials are intended to increase levels of light.

Access to the main museum entrance and foyer starts at the esplanade and is a gentle slope that slowly descends to -5 m. All common spaces are situated on both sides of this soft descending pathway.
The spatial programme is mainly installed on two levels both above and below ground (0 - + 5 m and 0 - -5m).
The volume is extended in the 2nd basement level with an area for temporary exhibitions and an accompanying warehouse.

At rooftop level (+ 5,80 m) a small transparent pavilion that houses a coffeeshop and the design exhibition hall is located. Thus, most space is left for the garden. At the south end, the garden is formed with multiple platforms and the pleasing view towards the lake are preserved for pedestrians and inhabitants of nearby buildings.
